Most people move house only a few times in their life, so they don't know what a normal moving quote or process looks like. Fake movers take advantage of that. A few simple checks protect you — whoever you end up booking.
Warning signs
- A price far below everyone else. A very low quote is often raised on moving day, when your things are already on the truck.
- No written quote. If they won't put the price and what's included in writing, walk away.
- A large advance before anything happens. Be careful with anyone who wants most of the money upfront.
- No address, only a mobile number. A real company has a business name, an address and a way to reach it beyond one phone.
- Copied names and websites. Some fake movers use names that look like well-known companies. Check the website address and the phone number carefully.
- Asking for an OTP, card details or passwords. A mover never needs these. Never share an OTP with anyone.
Questions to ask before you book
- Is the price fixed? What exactly does it include — packing, loading, transport, unloading, unpacking?
- Is insurance included, and what does it cover?
- How much is the advance, and when is the balance due?
- Will I get a booking ID and a pickup window?
- Who is my contact during transit, and how will I get updates?
- What happens if I need to cancel?
Get these in writing
- The quote with the final price and what's included.
- A booking confirmation with a booking ID.
- For vehicles, a condition report with photos before pickup.
- A list of items for household goods.
Check reviews the right way
Look for reviews that mention specific routes, dates and details, and see how the company replies to complaints. A page full of identical five-star reviews with no detail is a reason for caution, not confidence.
